A House is Not a Home Without Food in the Pantry

It’s hard to believe that Halloween has passed and the holidays are almost here. As you begin your busy shopping season, don’t forget that there are families in need this year. According to the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) of Texas, more than one in three Texas children is at risk of hunger. Fortunately, you can directly impact these families in need this holiday season. A simple donation of funds or canned foods to CAFB of Texas can provide hunger relief to those who need it most.

CAFB, a non-profit, is the largest hunger-relief charity in Central Texas. It provides food and grocery products, nutrition education, and social services outreach to 300,000 clients each year through a network of 300 Partner Agencies. These agencies distribute food to hungry families in Central Texas. According to the CAFB, 82 percent of the Food Bank Partner Agency recipients are food insecure and 49 percent experience outright hunger.

Donating to CAFB is one of the most resourceful ways to help a family this holiday season. 96 percent of all resources donated to CAFB are distributed to the community in the form of programs or food distribution. And your donation goes a long way. Thanks to a matching gift from the Beaumont Foundation, every $1 you donate will actually provide $10 worth of food.

CAFB will also gladly accept the following donations:

  • Items with intact, unopened consumer or commercial packaging
  • Items with non-breakable packaging (no glass, please)
  • Food within the expiration date on the packaging
  • Food from your community or backyard garden
  • Diapers
  • Healthy, non-perishable food

CAFB needs these non-perishable foods the most:

  • Canned meats like tuna, stew and chili (pop-tops preferred)
  • Canned vegetables
  • Pasta and pasta sauce
  • Beans
  • Healthy cereals
  • Peanut butter

Did you know that CAFB is able to deliver the equivalent of the weight of a Boeing 737 jet in food every day? That’s 22 million pounds of food a year! CAFB has also rescued 11 million pounds of food in the last 12 months from local grocers and wholesalers that would have ended up in the trash. Simply put, there is enough food to feed these Central Texas families, but we need your help.

Hunger is a holiday memory no one should have. This holiday season, make a family’s holiday special by ending hunger in Central Texas.
